ABOUT ME
My name is Arturo Avalos or otherwise universally known as "Artie". I am a Resident Assistant for UTEP Housing at Miner Canyon and I currently study Electrical Engineering with a concentration in Computer Engineering at UTEP as well, and I know what you're thinking. An engineer in an R.A position? It is a ways away from my career path and my previous position was actually at Office Depot where I worked as a Tech Consultant assisting customers with their computers and electronics.
"Why didn't you stay there? It makes more sense for a Computer Engineer!" Yes, staying in a part time position as an Undergrad relevant to my field would have made sense as opposed to a position where my technical knowledge is not really utilized everyday but what I was thinking when I was offered an interview for the position was opportunity.
During my time as an R.A I was given an opportunity to not only get to know and work with people from completely different backgrounds but to also learn more about myself.
Being on my own, living independently has allowed me to really look inside myself to see what really motivates me and what I really love. After one year as an R.A, I can honestly say that I would not have grown so much in such a short amount of time had I not taken the position.

Student Alumni Association
Vice President of Membership
As the Vice President of Membership, I was the main face that potential new members would see. The position's responsibilities were Recruitment, Retention, and organization of Social Activities. Recruitment was executed through membership drives organized by myself and varied by project. Some projects included tabling events outside of the Alumni Lodge, informational socials such as the Summer Orientation Presentation of "UTEP 101", an ice cream social where new students were presented information about the essential "need to knows" about UTEP such as: How to change your major, how to purchase parking permits, the best places to purchase textbooks, etc.

Young Achievers Forum
Inspiring the Young
When I was only an active member and Membership Chair for SAA, I was given the opportunity to become one of many UTEP tour guides for middle school students from around the region to learn the great things about receiving a higher education. In these tours, I guided my group through assigned stops around UTEP with different keynote speakers from different fields such as Business, Athletics, Medcial, and STEM. The keynote speakers at these stops gave a quick backstory as to how they came to their field, all of which had a different story to tell. At the end of the day, the students had better insight as to what should await them after they move through middle school and soon for them high school.

21st Century Scholars
The Best of The Best
The 21st Century Scholars Program is a type of Honors Program where select students from different colleges and departments are nominated by their mentor or supervisor and go through a sort of training process. In this process these students learn how to greatly utilize their skills as UTEP students and are presented with the opportunity to speak with representatives of different departments going over topics that greatly enhance our understanding and awareness of our education and as members of a community. I was given the honor of being nominated to be a 21st Century Scholar by my supervisor and from the program, I am highly motivated to dedicate myself to my community to help fellow members grow.
Since I was very active in High School (being a part of Band, Theater, and Choir), I wanted to stay busy as well in my collegiate studies. Within my own limits I am always willing to be involved with the extracurriculars that are available to me.
